ABOUT DENISE BRYAN

Prior to studying Sculpture at the Royal College of Art Denise Bryan gained her first degree in Fine Art at Middlesex Polytechnic. She makes sculptures and mixed media installations that have been shown both nationally and internationally. In addition she has undertaken residencies, made commissioned work and work for non gallery spaces.

Bryan works across media, making objects, photographic series, installations and performance pieces. Her studio increasingly resembles a Scrap Store, Bryan can't stop collecting things that have the potential to become objects: sculptures that have been described as "Hands on Conceptualism". The materials used to create these sculptures always have a conceptual value that underpins the work, but are also exploited for their visual qualities, colour and form. Once created, the artist explores the relationship between sculptural forms and photographic or, video image and sound. Recently, this has also included on exploration of the drawn line. Using combinations of these elements, Bryan is interested in creating new spatial dynamics. As the collections, including the sound and lens based components, are often collected whilst travelling, the works act as a narrative of personal experience. In a broader sense the pieces interrogate our relationship to the exotic. But the joy of reshaping space, creating environments of colour and sound is at the core of the work.

Between 2004 and 2007 Bryan collaborated on number of projects with her partner, Sound Artist Adrian Wilkins, these works were based on material gathered during a fifteen month trip along the Silk Road. Since that time she has re engaged with her solo sculptural practice. However the couple have some plans for future collaborations.
